If you searched how to make a clay earring holder, you probably have a drawer of tangled hoops and a missing stud somewhere under the bed. A standing clay holder fixes both. It is a small upright arch with rows of holes. Hooks and hoops hang through the holes. Studs sit in a shallow dish at the base. It takes about forty minutes to shape and a few days to dry.
This guide uses air-dry clay. No wheel, no kiln, no special tools. Your hands, a kit and a dresser that finally looks calm.
Why a clay earring holder beats a jewellery box
A box hides everything. You forget what you own and you wear the same pair every day. A standing holder shows every pair at once. Clay is heavy enough to stand steady, it does not rust like metal stands in humid bathrooms, and it looks like a small piece of decor on the dresser.
It also makes a good gift. A holder in her favourite colour, with a few pairs already hanging on it, is a present that gets used every morning.

How to make a clay earring holder step by step
Step 1: Roll the slab
Knead a fist-sized lump until smooth. Roll it flat to about 8 mm thick. Thinner than that and the holes weaken it. Thicker and it takes too long to dry.
Step 2: Cut the arch
Cut a shape about 12 cm tall and 10 cm wide with a rounded top. A cereal bowl makes a good template for the curve. Keep the bottom edge dead straight.
Step 3: Punch the holes
Use a straw or the round end of a tool from your kit. Make three or four rows of holes, spaced about 2 cm apart, starting 2 cm from the top. Leave the bottom 3 cm solid so the piece stays strong. Wiggle the straw gently so each hole is clean. Hooks need at least a 4 mm hole to pass through.
Step 4: Make the base
Roll a second slab and cut an oval about 12 cm long and 7 cm wide. Lift the edges slightly with damp fingers to make a very shallow dish. This is where studs and backs go.
Step 5: Join the arch to the base
Score a line across the middle of the base and along the bottom edge of the arch. Add a little water. Press the arch upright into the base. Roll a thin coil of clay and press it along both sides of the join, then smooth it flat. This coil is what stops the arch leaning as it dries.
Step 6: Check it stands
Set it on a flat board. If it leans, nudge it upright now and add a little more clay at the join. Once dry you cannot fix a lean.
Step 7: Dry slowly
Leave it away from direct AC airflow. Four to six days because of the joined base. Cover loosely with a cloth for the first two days so the thin arch and thick base dry at a similar rate.
Step 8: Sand, paint and seal
Sand the edges and run a fine file through each hole. Paint with the kit colours. A cream arch with a terracotta base is clean. Seal everything, including inside the holes, so hooks slide smoothly.
Make the matching pieces next. See how to make a clay ring dish and how to make a clay jewellery dish. If a hole cracks while drying, read how to fix cracks in air dry clay.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my arch crack near the holes?
Either the slab was too thin or the holes were too close together. Keep the slab 8 mm and the holes 2 cm apart. Dry it slowly under a cloth.
Will the holes shrink?
A little. Air-dry clay shrinks a few percent. Punch holes slightly bigger than you need. A dry hole can be widened with a small file.
How many pairs does it hold?
A 12 by 10 cm arch with four rows holds around twelve pairs of hooks or hoops. The base dish takes a dozen studs.
Can I use it for anything else?
Rings, a thin bracelet, prayer beads, a watch in the base dish. Keep it to jewellery and decor. Sawa pieces are not for food or drink.
Finish the dresser
An earring holder is the piece people notice. With the rest of the Solo Kit you can add a ring dish and a small bukhoor holder in the same colours. One clay, one palette, one tidy corner.
