How to Make a Clay Business Card Holder: A Simple Step by Step Guide

Cartoon of a person shaping air-dry clay at a desk, a step by step guide on how to make a clay business card holder

Your desk has a laptop, a lamp and a pile of business cards held together with a rubber band. A handmade clay business card holder fixes that in one evening. It looks better than anything from a stationery shop, and every person who picks up a card will ask where you got it. Here is exactly how to make a clay business card holder with air-dry clay.

Why this is a smart desk project in the UAE

Business cards still matter here. Networking events in DIFC, exchanges at Abu Dhabi Global Market, a new client in Sharjah. A holder that sits on your desk or reception counter says something about how you work. Handmade says it better than plastic.

It is also a fast win. No wheel. No kiln. Ninety minutes of shaping, two days of drying, then it is on your desk. And it makes a thoughtful gift for a colleague starting a new role or a manager who has everything.

One rule before you start. Air-dry clay pieces are decor only. Cards, keys, prayer beads and display. Never food or drink.

How to make a clay business card holder, step by step

Step 1. Measure with a real card

A standard card is 9 by 5 centimetres. Your holder base should be 10 by 4 centimetres so the cards lean slightly and are easy to grab.

Step 2. Roll a slab

Knead a portion of clay for two minutes. Roll it to about 8 millimetres. A card holder needs to be sturdy, so go thicker than you would for a dish.

Step 3. Cut the base and back

Cut a base at 10 by 4 centimetres. Cut a back wall at 10 by 5 centimetres. Cut a front lip at 10 by 1.5 centimetres.

Step 4. Score, slip and join

Scratch the joining edges, brush on a little water and press the back wall onto the base at a slight backward lean. Press the front lip on the opposite edge. Smooth every seam with your finger. Strong joins are what make this piece last.

Step 5. Add a design

Press a texture into the back wall. Geometric lines, a fork pattern or your initial carved with the tool. Keep the front lip plain so the cards stay visible.

Step 6. Test the fit

Slide a real card in while the clay is still soft. Adjust the lean of the back wall until the cards sit neatly.

Step 7. Dry slowly

Leave it flat for 48 hours, away from direct sun and air conditioning vents. Turn it after the first day.

Step 8. Paint and seal

Paint in a single colour for a professional look. Terracotta or teal work well on a wooden desk. Seal with two thin coats and let it cure a full day before use.

Three variations once you have made one

A double holder with a divider down the middle keeps your cards on one side and collected cards on the other. A wall-mounted version with a hole in the back wall hangs beside a reception desk. A tall angled version holds a phone as well as cards. Each one uses the same slab, score and join method, so the second piece is faster than the first.

Keep the finish consistent if you are making a set for an office. One colour, one texture, one sealer. It reads as a collection rather than a craft project.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards does it hold?

Around 20 to 25 standard cards with the measurements above. Widen the base to 5 centimetres for more.

Why did the back wall fall off while drying?

The join was not scored and wetted enough. Score deeply, use a little water and smooth the seam inside and out.

Can I make several as corporate gifts?

Yes. The Group Kit at AED 288 has enough clay for four or more holders. Paint each one in the company colour.

Will it scratch my desk?

Sand the base smooth before sealing. You can also glue a small piece of felt underneath.
