Does air dry clay shrink? Yes. Most air dry clay shrinks a little as the water leaves it. Plan for about two to five percent. A piece that is 10 cm wide when wet may end up near 9.5 cm when dry.
Why shrinking matters
You shape a lid to fit a small dish. It fits perfectly. Next day it is loose. Or you press two pieces together and a gap opens up as they dry. This is the number one surprise for new makers.
In the UAE it can happen faster. Dry air pulls water out of the clay quickly. That means more shrinking and more cracks if the piece dries too fast.
How a Sawa kit helps
The clay in a Sawa kit is chosen for beginners. It is soft, it holds its shape and it shrinks very little. The guide tells you how to dry your piece slowly so it stays flat and strong.

What actually happens as clay dries
Air dry clay is clay plus water plus a binder. When the water leaves, the particles move closer together. The piece gets smaller and lighter. It also gets harder.
Thick pieces shrink more
A thick piece holds more water. It takes longer to dry and moves more. Keep walls even, about 5 to 8 mm.
Uneven drying warps
If one side dries first, the piece curls. Turn it every few hours. Keep it out of direct sun and away from the air conditioner vent.
Humidity changes the pace
Humid days slow drying. Dry days speed it up. Our note on air dry clay and UAE humidity explains how to adjust.
How to plan for shrinkage
- Make lids and inserts slightly larger than you think.
- Keep walls an even thickness.
- Dry in a shaded room on a flat board.
- Flip the piece once the top feels firm.
- Wait a full 24 to 48 hours before painting.
When joining parts, score and slip them well. Our guide to joining air dry clay pieces shows how.
What you can make
Shrinking is easy to handle with decor. A bukhoor burner, a prayer beads holder, a key dish, a candle holder or a shelf piece all forgive a small change in size. Pieces are decor only.
Once dry, smooth the surface. See how to sand air dry clay. Then paint.
Questions people ask
Does air dry clay crack when it shrinks?
It can, if it dries too fast. Slow drying and even walls prevent most cracks.
Can I stop shrinking completely?
No. But you can keep it small and predictable.
Does paint change the size?
No. Paint adds a thin layer only.
Do I need a kiln?
No. The clay hardens in the air. No firing.
